Our Story

Walter “Wally” Grossman realized after graduating from school in 1935, that finding employment in the midst of the Great Depression was not going to be easy. He then began developing and manufacturing heat and thermal protective apparel for foundry workers, steel pipe manufacturers and welders in his father’s basement in Cleveland, Ohio.

It wasn’t long before Wally’s business took off and his father, George, quit his job and began working alongside his son. Together, they started a successful family business despite severe economic conditions.

We help workers get home safely each night.

Our Vision: To provide innovative and high-quality safety apparel to our customers to get them home safely, day after day.

The family business has continued to grow over the years and is known today as National Safety Apparel®. When asked about the history of NSA, Chuck Grossman, Jr., the current owner and President, states “Our business began with heat and thermal products and the intent to provide the highest quality protective apparel for individuals working in high heat environments. Today, we are a fourth-generation, family-owned business that understands the importance of safety, quality, comfort, and customization. We continue to innovate and enhance our selection of products every day.”

Innovation is the core that drives us each day.

National Safety Apparel’s house of brands has grown to include personal protective equipment (PPE) for flash fire and arc flash, cut protection, hi-vis work and foul weather gear, and our evolving, foundational thermal protection. Our team is ready to provide solutions to your PPE challenges and address your needs, questions, and requests; providing advantages that help make your purchasing decision easier.

We have contributed to the fabric of America.

We have supplied the country’s earliest steel mills with the personal protective equipment worn when making steel that went into many of our country’s national landmarks. These mills have produced steel used in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and 85% of the New York skyline. >

We are proud to still manufacture in Cleveland, Ohio, today.  We are ISO 9001:2015 certified with design.  Our certification allows us to offer product customization and personalization to any of our products, and the ability to develop products to best meet your specific needs and hazards.

Here we grow!

We have made strategic acquisitions that enable us to offer the best possible products and technologies to our customers. Those acquisitions, coupled with our organic growth, have built out our product line in FR clothing and thermal protection.

On September 11th, 2017, we moved into an additional facility and have created the new National Safety Apparel Fulfillment Center, adding an additional 60,000+ square feet of space to fulfill orders and expand our office space. For more than 80 years, workers across the country have come to rely on quality craftsmanship, durability, and innovation that define National Safety Apparel. We owe a huge thanks to our customers who helped us get where we are today and look forward to continued support in pursuing our passion.

NSA is committed to customer satisfaction by providing quality products with responsive service and delivery. We will achieve this by fostering and maintaining a safe, collaborative and positive environment of teamwork, open participation, and continual improvement.
